How to train as a UK Accredited Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Teacher with  

Mindful Academy International

To train as an Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Teacher, the Mindfulness Best Practice Guidelines require completion of an in-depth, rigorous mindfulness-based teacher training programme and supervised pathway over a minimum duration of 12 months. This is referred to as the Teacher Training Pathway or (TTP) This pathway is comprised of pre-course training, the courses and supervison. 

To apply to join the professional accredited 200hr MBSR Teacher Training course (TTR1 & TTR2) you should -

  • Be a minimum of 25 years old
  • Have 2 years Meditation Experience (see also CPD/CEU training route below) a minimum of 5 times per week (not necessarily Mindfulness Meditation)
  • Ideally attended a Silent Teacher lead Mindfulness Meditation retreat of between 2 and 5 days
  • Have attended a Live 8 Week MBSR/MBCT course as a participant either -
    • In your home location with a qualified teacher OR
    • Take the Mindful Academy International Live Online 8 Week MBSR Course OR
    • Attend a 5 or 6 day Condenced course with either Kathy Ward or Bodhin Woodward
  • MBSR Teacher Training Advanced Level 2 TTR2 Applications - Previously attended a mindfulness-based ‘Teacher Training Retreat level 1’ with us, or an equivalent programme with another organization (contact us if you are not sure about equivalency)

OR

To apply to join the 100hr Foundation MBSR Teacher Training Level 1 (TTR1) course as continued professional development (CPD/CEU) you should -

  • Be a minimum of 25 years old
  • Have 1 years Meditation Experience (see also below) a minimum of 5 times per week (not necessarily Mindfulness Meditation)
  • Have attended a Live 8 Week MBSR/MBCT course as a participant either -
    • In your home location with a qualified teacher OR
    • Take the Mindful Academy International Live Online 8 Week MBSR Course OR
    • Attend a 5 or 6 day Condenced course with either Kathy Ward or Bodhin Woodward
    • If you then go on to take the 100hr MBSR Teacher Training Advanced Level 2 you should have at least 2 years personal meditation practice at time of graduation. 

Please Note - We do not accept 8 week MBSR Courses where you are self paced and do not have LIVE interaction with a qualified MBSR/MBCT Teacher

LEVEL 1 FOUNDATION MBSR TEACHER TRAINING - 

1. How to Book your space  -

  • Complete and return the application form Download it here
  • On acceptance, pay the €600 deposit
  • Arrange a 60 minute online Supervision call to get you started on the Foundation course pre-course study (worth €50)
  • Attend the 8 x 1 hour Free Live online Group Supervision calls to deepen your preparation. Don't worry if you miss a call or book close to the start date as recordings will be available. (worth €200) 
  • Dates will be given for both the 60 minute and the Group Supervision calls in your acceptance email.
  • Complete the required pre-course study

2. Attend the 100hr MBSR Foundation TTR1 Course -

  • Attend the 10 day Foundation at the 4 star Albir Playa Hotel and Spa (link is external) either on a non residential or residential basis
  • The training includes -
    • Indepth workshops and experiential learning of Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction as taught by leaders in the field this includes the Centre for Mindfulness Practice and Research CMRP where I trained and the original MBSR programme taught at UMASS Centre for Medicine. The course also includes some elements of Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy whilst retaining the integrity of the original programme. 
    • Indepth workshops on teaching and experiential learning of both Mindful Movement and Inquiry teaching teaching practice
    • Assesment, feedback and development of core Meditation and Mindful Movement practices with the Mindfulness-based Intervention Teaching Assessment Criteria (MBI-TAC) and also how to take the MBI-TAC forward to support your own development as a teacher.
  • You will receive a comprehensive Manual covering all aspects of teaching Mindfulness, Professional Resources and Meditation Scripts and mp3 recordings of all practices. 
  • On successful completion of the Foundation course, you will be eligable to join the Yoga Alliance Professionals as an affiliate. Please check their website for details (external link)

3. Following the Level 1 Foundation TTR1 Course  - 

  • Arrange your one hour private online Supervision call to discuss the feedback from the formal assessments and your next steps (worth €50) 
  • Continue your Personal and Professional development as discussed during the Mindfulness-based Teaching Assessment Criteria (MBI-TAC) feedback and Supervision session
  • It is recommended that you undertake ongoing Supervision and development as outlined in the Mindfulness Good Practice Guidelines

4. Gaining teaching experience and deepen your personal Mindfulness MBSR Practice - 

  • Practice Teaching the MBSR core practices including Mindful Movement learnt during the MBSR Foundation course to family, friends, in classes or workshops
  • Optional depending on skills of the individual -
    • Co-lead an 8 week MBSR course and/or
    • Lead an 8 week MBSR course with the Mindful Academy International Supervision package or as per the Mindfulness Best Practice Guidelines a minimum of 3 hours supervision per course
  • Continue your Personal and Professional development as discussed during the MBI-TAC teaching assessment criteria feedback and end of course review
  • It is recommended that you undertake ongoing Supervision and development as outlined in the Mindfulness Good Practice Guideline including attendance at a yearly 4 - 5 day teacher lead Silent Retreat

LEVEL 2 ADVANCED MBSR TEACHER TRAINING  -

1. How to Book your space on the Advanced Course TTR2 UK accredited MBSR Teacher Training

  • Previously attended a mindfulness-based ‘Teacher Training Retreat level 1’ with us, or an equivalent programme with another organization (contact us if you are not sure about equivalency). TTR1 with Mindful Academy, Mindful Academy International or Mindful Academy Solterreno are automatically accepted. 
  • Attend a 7 day Silent retreat as a participant before attending the Advanced MBSR Teacher Training course. You can book your space before going on the Retreat.
  • Complete and return the application form Download it here 
  • On acceptance, pay the €600 deposit
  • Arrange a 60 minute online Supervision call to get you started on the Advanced pre-course study (worth €50)
  • Attend the 8 x 1 hour Free Live Online Group Supervision calls to deepen your preparation, recordings will be available if you miss a call or book close to the start date (worth €200)
  • Dates will be given for both the 60 minute individual and Group Supervisions calls in your acceptance email.
  • Complete the required pre-course study

2. Attend the 100hr MBSR Advanced Course TTR2 -

  • Attend the 10 day Advanced course at the 4 star Albir Playa Hotel and Spa (link is external) either on a non residential or residential basis
  • The Advanced Training is an intensive experiential training retreat offering space for nourishment, inspiration and learning. An opportunity to engage in a personal and group learning process which is designed to support and deepen understanding and skills in teaching and integrating mindfulness-based approaches in professional practice, in particular indepth workshops on teaching and experiential learning of the full 8 week MBSR Course. 
  • The course includes assesment, feedback and development with the Mindfulness-based Intervention Teaching Assessment Criteria (MBI-TAC) and also how to take the MBI-TAC forward to support your own development as a teacher.
  • You will receive the Mindful Academy International 8 Week MBSR Course Session Plans and Participants Handbook so that you can start to teach straight away, along with additional manual pages.

3. Following the Level 2 Advanced TTR2 Course  -

  • Arrange your one hour private online Supervision call to discuss the feedback from the formal assessments and your next steps (worth €50) 
  • Continue your Personal and Professional development as discussed during the Mindfulness-based Teaching Assessment Criteria (MBI-TAC) feedback and Supervision session
  • It is recommended that you undertake ongoing Supervision and development as outlined in the Mindfulness Good Practice Guidelines

Gain a Recognised Qualification -

On successful completion of both the Foundation and Advanced courses with us, you will be awarded the full 200hr Mindfulness MBSR Teacher Training certificate and be eligable to join both our list of Mindfulness MBSR Teachers. You will also be able to join the Yoga Alliance Professionals as a Registered Teacher - if you upgrade from affiliate to Registered Teacher within 14 days of Graduation, you will receive a 35 pound discount. 

Once you have completed your profile and added the Yoga Alliance professionals membership logo to your own website your profile will be live and you can start promoting yourself by advertising classes, workshops, books, products, jobs, coupons, and much more!

PLEASE NOTE -  if you have taken the TTR1 course with other organisations and are accepted to take the TTR2 with us, you will receive a certificate for the 100hr MBSR Advanced Teacher Training Course. You will still be eligable to join our list of Mindfulness MBSR Teachers, your listing will show that you have taken the MBSR Advanced Teacher Training course with us, however you will not be eligable to join the Yoga Alliance Professionals. 

MBSR TEACHER ON-GOING SUPPORT -

For both personal and teaching practice - 

  • Undertake ongoing Supervision and development as outlined in the Mindfulness Good Practice Guidelines (GPG's)
  • As part of GPG's attend a 5 day teacher lead Silent Retreat each year
  • For those based in the UK, after teaching at least 2 MBSR 8 Week courses under supervision, apply to join the Mindfulness Network of Teachers You do not need to have been trained by a UK Network organisation, as the Mindful Academy International course is based on the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) (www.umassmed.edu/cfm) however you will be asked to demonstrate that our course meets the Good Practice Guidelines (it exceeds it)
